About Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja is a major Hindu festival, celebrated with great devotion and gaiety, especially in the Terai regions of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Nepal. This festival is famous for the worship of Sun God and his wife Usha, also known as Chhathi Maiyaa. Chhath Puja is mainly celebrated for four days, starting from Shashthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kattik month. The first day is called Nahay-Khay, in which devotees purify themselves by taking a bath and consume food like . The second day is called Kharna, when devotees observe a fast by taking a bath in the river Ganges or other holy bodies of water. The third day is called Sanjhi Chhath, in which Arghya is offered to the Sun God at the time of sunset, and the fourth day is called Usha Chhath, in which the fast is ended by offering Arghya to the Sun God at the time of sunrise. During this time devotees observe fast throughout the day with deep devotion and faith, and seek blessings from the Sun God for the happiness and prosperity of the family. Chhath Puja is usually organized traditionally in villages and towns on the banks of rivers or ponds, where people gather in large numbers and worship the Sun God. This puja is not only important from the religious point of view, but it also has great importance socially and culturally, because it keeps people together in the feeling of unity and brotherhood.
Why is Chhath Puja Celebrated?
The history of Chhath Puja is extremely ancient, and it is believed that this puja originated from the tribal culture of the Indian subcontinent. This puja is specifically related to the Sun God and his wife Usha i.e., Chhathi Maiyaa, and through this there is a tradition of seeking blessings from the Sun God for the energy of life, health, prosperity and happiness and peace of the family.
Historically, Chhath Puja is also mentioned in the Mahabharata, where it is described as ‘Suryopasna’. The Adiparva of the Mahabharata mentions the worship of the Sun God in the context of Karna, who was the son of Surya. Apart from this, another historical reference of Chhath Puja is that this puja was also done for the welfare of the kings and empires, so that the blessings of the Sun God remain in their kingdom.
According to folk traditions, Chhath Puja is associated with a special event, when the Sun God, along with his wife Usha, performed a rigorous penance, as a result of which he gave life to life on earth. This worship is believed to be associated with the beginning of creation, where the basis and continuity of life is ensured by the worship of the Sun.
It is said that Chhath Puja originated in Bihar region, but with time this puja spread to Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Nepal and other regions also. This puja is performed with great pomp in Bihar, and according to the folklore and traditional beliefs here, this puja was first started by King Shivagupta, who celebrated this festival to worship the Sun God. Gradually this festival became established as a cultural and religious tradition in the public mind.
Four Days Ritual of Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja is an important religious festival of four days, which is especially celebrated to worship the Sun God. Every day has its own importance and significance, and includes fasting, puja, and preparation of special dishes. Let us know in detail about the four days of this festival:
1. First day – Nahay-Khay
It is the first day of the puja, when the Vrati (fast) goes through the process of purification and the main purpose of this day is to purify the body and soul. This day is called ‘Nahay-Khay’, because the devotees eat especially pure food after taking a bath. On this day, devotees take bath in river Ganga or any other holy reservoir and then return home and wear clean clothes. After this, they eat exclusively simple food like arwa-rice, gram dal, puri and sabzi like potato, cauliflower, bottle gourd and some fritters and all this is made in rock salt, which is pure and without onion-garlic. In this, first the fasting people eat food on a Fulha plate or banana leaf and only after they finish eating, anyone else in the house can eat.
2. Second day – Kharna
On this day, the devotees observe a complete fast and remain fasting throughout the day. They get ready to worship the Sun God, and in the evening they do puja for the happiness of children and the happiness and prosperity of the family. On this day, devotees take bath in sacred reservoirs. They especially fast, and perform puja in the evening for the happiness of their children. There is fasting on this day, hence no special food is prepared, but jaggery rice pudding, wheat bread is distributed and special fruits like simple fruits like bananas and some sweets are eaten served on banana leaves. One of the fascinating facts about this puja is whatever dishes are prepared, they are prepared on a new earthen stove and some cow dung is used to purify it. Mango tree sticks are used for making the food. The food is served on banana leaves and everyone will greet the person fasting before eating. After having the food, the fasting person used mustard oil and sindoor as a ritual and it is applied on everyone.
3. Third day – Saanjhi Chhath
This day is the most important day of Chhath Puja. Devotees gather on the banks of rivers or ponds in the evening and worship the Sun God. At the time of sunset, the devotees reach the ghat for the ritual. They especially thank the Sun God and seek blessings. This day is also called “Sanjhi Chhath”. It serves fruits and sweets. All the fruits are first washed and are kept in the winnowing basket which is kept in a bamboo basket and these winnowing baskets are arranged on a pier to offer to the Sun god. One of the most important things made on this day is thekua and khajoor made of refined flour and sugar. After returning to home, the devotees fill kosi (earthen elephant) and decorate with sugarcane all around. All fruits and dishes like khajoor and thekua are filled in a towel, and this towel is attached to the kosi and this is called kosi bharna. Diyas are lit around the kosi and some bhajans are also sung. After geet, the black ash collected on sugarcane is used as kajal and put on everyone’s eyes. People also sing folk songs and bhajans to celebrate the festival. This same kosi bharna process is done the next morning before the sunrise on the fourth date. The earthen elephant with the offering is immersed in the river.
4. Fourth day – Usha Chhath
This is the fourth and last day of Chhath Puja, which is called ‘Usha Chhath’. On this day, Arghya is offered to the Sun God at sunrise, and the fasting people break their fast. The worship on this day is very special, as it is considered the culmination of the rigorous penance of Vrati. The vrati goes into the river for sacred bath and greets the god with deep or agarbatti to offer arghya and supli is given to the vrati to offer to Sun god one by one , and then katha is done by the priest. At the time of sunrise, the devotees reach the banks of the river or pond and offer Arghya to the Sun God. On this day, devotees break their rigorous fast and receive blessings from the Sun.
