TENSES: काल
Tense is referred to as time. A time when something happened or a time when something is going to happen. It generally shows the events of past, present, and future.
काल को मूल रूप से समय कहा जाता है। वह समय जब कुछ हुआ हो या ऐसा समय जब कुछ होने वाला हो। यह आम तौर पर भूत, वर्तमान और भविष्य की घटनाओं को दर्शाता है।
There are three types of tenses:
- Past Tense
भूतकाल
- Present Tense
वर्तमान काल
- Future Tense
भविष्य काल
Past Tense:(भूतकाल)
It means any action being taken place in the past. It can also be said as a verb denoting a state of action or talking about an event or an incident that happened in the past. Generally, the word ‘ed ’ suffixing a verb shows that it is past tense.
इसका अर्थ है अतीत में की गई कोई भी कार्रवाई। इसे क्रिया के रूप में भी कहा जा सकता है जो क्रिया की स्थिति को दर्शाता है या किसी घटना के बारे में बात करता है जो अतीत में हुई थी। आम तौर पर क्रिया के प्रत्यय ‘एड’ शब्द से पता चलता है कि यह भूतकाल है।

There are four types of Past Tense:
- Simple Past Tense: (सरल भूत काल:)
Simple Past Tense also known as Past Indefinite Tense is a verb that expresses or describes actions that happened in the past. This tense can also identify a specific time frame when the actions took place. It shows that an event began in the past and ended in the past therefore the activity has been completed.
सरल भूत काल, जिसे पास्ट इंडिफिनिट टेन्स के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, एक क्रिया है जो अतीत में हुई क्रियाओं के बारे में बताती है या बात करती है। यह काल क्रियाओं के होने पर एक विशिष्ट समय सीमा की पहचान भी कर सकता है। यह दर्शाता है कि एक घटना अतीत में शुरू हुई और अतीत में समाप्त हुई इसलिए गतिविधि पूरी हो गई है।
Formula: Subject + V2+ Object
फॉर्मूला: सब्जेक्ट+ V2+ ऑब्जेक्ट
*V2: The past form of a verb

I did not hear dogs barking near my house.

She was not eating salad for lunch yesterday.
वह कल लंच में सलाद नहीं खा रही थी।
I did not like the chocolate you gave me.
आपने मुझे जो चॉकलेट दी, वह मुझे पसंद नहीं आई।

Contractions:
संकुचन:
Contractions are when two words are combined and shortened to form a word. Following are some of the contractions used in Simple Past Tense and their examples:
संकुचन तब होते हैं जब दो शब्दों को मिलाकर एक शब्द बनाया जाता है। सरल भूत काल में प्रयुक्त कुछ संकुचन और उनके उदाहरण निम्नलिखित हैं:
- Was Not – Wasn’t
नहीं था – नहीं था
My friend wasn’t prepared for her exam.
मेरा दोस्त उसकी परीक्षा के लिए तैयार नहीं था।
The movie wasn’t interesting.
फिल्म दिलचस्प नहीं थी।
He wasn’t tall.
वह लंबा नहीं था।

नहीं थे – नहीं थे
Most of the children weren’t there in the classroom.
अधिकांश बच्चे कक्षा में नहीं थे।
You weren’t excited about the movie yesterday.
आप कल फिल्म के लिए उत्साहित नहीं थे।
They weren’t happy to see the guest.
वे अतिथि को देखकर खुश नहीं थे।

I didn’t understand what she told.

Uses of Simple Past Tense:
सरल भूत काल के उपयोग:
- To express habitual facts, universal truths, and actions those are finished.
आदतन तथ्यों, सार्वभौमिक सत्यों और कार्यों को समाप्त करने के लिए व्यक्त करना।
Example:
I talked to her every day last month.
मैंने पिछले महीने उससे हर दिन बात की थी।
Christopher Columbus invented America.
क्रिस्टोफर कोलंबस ने अमेरिका का आविष्कार किया।
I watched a movie yesterday.
मैंने कल एक फिल्म देखी।
- Unrealistic imagination of the present or future
वर्तमान या भविष्य की अवास्तविक कल्पना
Example:
If I had more time I would go to a few more places.
अगर मेरे पास और समय होता तो मैं कुछ और जगहों पर जाता।
I wish I won the lottery to build a house.
काश मैंने घर बनाने की लॉटरी जीती होती।
If I spoke to him a few more times our friendship would have lasted longer.
अगर मैं उससे कुछ और बात कर लेता तो हमारी दोस्ती और लंबी हो जाती।
How to write short answers in Past Simple Tense:
पास्ट सिंपल टेंस में संक्षिप्त उत्तर कैसे लिखें:
- Did they finish their work?
क्या उन्होंने अपना काम पूरा किया?
- Yes, they did.
- हाँ, उन्होंने किया।
- No, they didn’t.
- नहीं, उन्होंने नहीं किया।
- Did you go home?
क्या आप घर गए थे?
- Yes, I did.
- हाँ, मैं गया था।
- No, I didn’t.
- नहीं, मैंने नहीं गया था। ।
- Did she sleep?
क्या वह सोई थी?
- Yes, she did.

- Did it bite?
क्या यह काटता हैं?

- He stayed at a friend’s house.
- वह एक दोस्त के घर रुका था।
- What did you bring?
तुम क्या लाए हो?
- I brought some clothes.
- मैं कुछ कपड़े लाया।
- Where did they eat lunch?
उन्होंने दोपहर का भोजन कहाँ किया?
- They ate lunch at a restaurant.
- उन्होंने एक रेस्तरां में दोपहर का खाना खाया।

Change the verb in the brackets to Simple Past Tense:
