History Behind Celebrating Holi Every Year

The festival of Holi is associated with Hindu mythology and scriptures. The most popular story is taken from the Bhagavata Purana, in which the festival of Holi marks the victory of evil over good.

According to the story, a powerful demon king Hiranyakashipu wanted to declare himself as God. But his son Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Enraged by this, Hiranyakashipu tried to kill Prahlad several times but failed. Finally, he asked his sister Holika, who had the power to enter the fire, to sit in the blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap. But Prahlad’s devotion to Lord Vishnu saved him and Holika burnt to ashes. This incident symbolizes the victory of devotion and truth over cruelty and ego.

This burning of Holika is celebrated as ‘Holika Dahan’ a day before Holi. The next day people play with colors and pour coloured water on each other, signifying the joy of victory over evil.
