A List of Phobias to Enrich Your Vocabulary

Some traits or characteristics of an individual are there by birth and some are added with experiences of life and the maturity one attains after a passage of time.

One such characteristic of an individual is the fear of certain things like water, height, insects, etc. Do you know there are terms attributed to such fears?

What is the term attributed to such fear?

The term attributed to fears of that sort is “Phobia”.

Phobia is a fear of doing a certain activity, in a particular state, or fear of animals and birds. A person possessing those can go to any extent to avoid the company of such things and many times suffer from certain health problems like panic attacks.

After a descriptive analysis of Phobia, what about knowing some phobias which we see in people most of the time?

  1. Acrophobia

Meaning:

Fear of heights.

ऊंचाई से डरना।

Acrophobia can be elaborated as a fear of climbing massive heights or looking down from greater altitudes. You might have come across persons of that sort who escape 

  1. Cynophobia 

Meaning:

Fear of dogs

कुत्ते से डरना।

Most of us possess a fear of animals which keeps us away from them and the same is the case here too. Cynophobia is the term given to the fear of dogs.

  1. Aquaphobia

Meaning:

Fear of water

पानी से डरना।

Water, be it a sea or river, poses a threat to the aquaphobic person. They always stay away from activities like swimming because the fear of water.

  1. Nyctophobia

Meaning:

Fear of darkness.

अंधेरे से डरना।

A fear of darkness is quite common. You might have encountered some person possessing this fear. Such people are also  afraid of walking alone at night.

  1. Thanatophobia

Meaning:

Fear of death or dying.

जान जाने का डर।

Thanatophobia can be described as the fear of one’s death. They are afraid of dying or death haunts them all the time.

  1. Ophidiophobia

Meaning:

Fear of snakes

सांप से डरना।

Reptiles also pose a threat to many people. Such is the case here where people are afraid of snakes.

  1. Entomophobia

Meaning:

Fear of insects.

कीड़े मकोड़े का डर।

Some people are afraid of insects. Such a type of fear can be termed as entomophobia.

  1. Bibliophobia

Meaning:

Fear of books

किताबों का डर।

Books become an element of threat to a very good number of people. Such fear can be termed Bibliophobia. The fear may be of any book be it a text book or story book.

  1. Zeusophobia

Meaning:

Fear of God.

भगवान का डर।

Most of us believe in God. We know that there is an energy which is above us and is judging our deeds. This gives rise to fear of God which is known as Zeusophobia.

  1. Philophobia

Meaning:

Fear of falling in love or being in love.

प्यार में पड़ने का डर।

Some people are afraid of falling in love. They are known to be Philophobiac.

  1. Fructophobia

Meaning:

Fear of fruits

फल खाने का डर।

Fructophobiacs are fearful of eating fruits owing to the large presence of sugar in them and this is why they avoid eating fruits.

  1. Glossophobia

Meaning:

Fear of public speaking

लोगों के सामने बोलने का डर।

Anxiety and less confidence while expressing yourself amongst a large group of people is called glossophobia.

  1. Amaxophobia

Meaning:

Fear of driving.

गाड़ी चलाने का डर।

People who are scared to drive cars or anything are called amaxophobiac which makes them avoid doing activities of such sort.

  1. Gelotophobia

Meaning:

Fear of being laughed at.

मज़ाक उड़ने का डर।

This is quite common but to the extreme point, it leads to phobia. A person who has a fear of being laughed at by others is called gelotophobia.

  1. Phonophobia

Meaning:

Fear of loud sounds.

तेज़ आवाज से डरना।

Loud sounds are not always liked by others. They believe it to be fearing them. Such cases are known as phonophobia.

  1. Cibophobia

Meaning:

Fear of food.

खाने का डर।

Some people are afraid of eating food. This can be one kind of the food which has given rise to such situations. They are called Cibophobia.

  1. Somniphobia

Meaning:

Fear of sleep

नींद न आने का डर।

People who overthink that they might not have a sound sleep at night suffer from a kind of fear called Somniphobia.

  1. Nomophobia

Meaning:

Fear of losing one’s smartphone

अपनी मोबाइल को खो देने का डर।

Mobile phones have become another addiction in the recent past. Some people fear losing their mobile phones. This fear is called nomophobia.

  1. Sesquipedalophobia

Meaning:

Fear of long words.

बड़े शब्दों का डर।

This is more of a student-oriented phobia where they are afraid of seeing bigger words and find it difficult to learn.

  1. Monophobia

Meaning:

Fear of staying alone.

अकेले रहने का डर।

Often when we are left alone at home or in an unknown place something starts haunting us which can be termed as monophobia where we don’t want to stay alone.

  1. Atychiphobia

Meaning:

Fear of failure.

असफल होने का डर।

Nobody likes failure, but it’s a part of life. Everyone fears failing but when this fear increases to a large extent, it becomes a phobia called atychiphobia.

  1. Nosophobia

Meaning:

Fear of developing a disease.

किसी बीमारी के होने का डर 

Often after listening to someone who is suffering from a disease, we tend to imbibe a behaviour that the same disease doesn’t disturb us, those people are said to be nosophobiac.

  1. Claustrophobia

Meaning:

Fear of staying in confined places.

छोटी या बंद जगह में रहने का डर।

Small spaces create trouble for many people and the fear of staying at a confined space is called claustrophobia.

  1. Agoraphobia

Meaning:

Fear of crowd

भीड़ से डरना।

Some of us live with our parents and don’t like to be a part of a crowd. Such is the case with agoraphobia too; the fear of being a part of a crowd.

  1. Ornithophobia

Meaning:

Fear of birds

पंछी से डरना।

Birds also create trouble for people who think that it would harm them or bring trouble. Those people are known as ornithophobiac.
