English Reading Activity 13: The “Bill Decoder” (Utilities & Payments)

Share

Paragraph Reading

Read the following passage carefully. Pay attention to the details.

Every month, households receive utility bills for essential services like electricity, water, and gas. Understanding the layout of these documents is key to avoiding service interruptions. The most critical piece of information is the 'Due Date'. This is the final day you can pay the bill without facing a late fee or penalty. Paying after this date can lead to extra charges being added to your next statement.

Another important section is the 'Consumption' data. For electricity, this is usually measured in "units" or "kilowatt-hours" (kWh). By comparing your current reading with the previous month’s usage, you can see if your family is using more energy than usual. You should also look for the 'Outstanding Balance', which shows any unpaid money from the previous month. Most utility companies now offer a 'Paperless' option, where they send the bill via email to save trees. Lastly, always check the 'Customer Support' number or 'Helpline' printed on the bill in case you find an error in the calculation. Being a careful reader of your bills helps you stay organized and save money.
